Ontario changed how foreign driving experience from non-exchange jurisdictions is credited on July 1, 2026. This guide explains the current licence-exchange path, the new 12-month experience-credit limit, required tests, waiting periods, and documents for newcomers.
Which Ontario licence pathway applies to you?
Your first step is to determine whether the place that issued your valid licence has a reciprocal exchange agreement with Ontario. The answer changes the tests and waiting periods that apply.
Licences from exchange jurisdictions
Ontario has exchange agreements with every Canadian province and territory, every U.S. state, and selected foreign jurisdictions. Eligible applicants may exchange an equivalent licence without entering the full graduated licensing process. The Ontario licence you receive depends on the class of your current licence and how much recognized experience you have.
Do not rely on an old country list. Check Ontario’s current licence-exchange page before visiting DriveTest because participating jurisdictions and document requirements can change.
Licences from non-exchange jurisdictions
Starting July 1, 2026, Ontario limits non-reciprocal foreign driving-experience credit to a maximum of 12 months. Applicants must enter Ontario’s graduated licensing system and complete both road tests.
- Pass the vision and knowledge tests to receive a G1 licence.
- Receive up to 12 months of eligible, verified foreign-experience credit.
- Complete the G2 road test when the Level One waiting requirement has been met.
- After passing the G2 test, wait at least 12 months before attempting the G road test.
- Pass the G road test to earn a full G licence.
Foreign experience cannot reduce the mandatory 12-month wait between the G2 and G road tests. This is the key difference from the pathway available before July 1, 2026.
How does foreign-experience credit work after July 1, 2026?
Ontario may credit eligible experience from the previous three years, up to a maximum of 12 months. The amount accepted depends on the dates and documents DriveTest can verify.
- At least 12 months of accepted credit: you may be eligible to take the G2 road test immediately after completing the vision and knowledge requirements.
- Less than 12 months of accepted credit: the credited time counts toward the normal Level One waiting period, and you complete the remaining time before the G2 test.
- Approved BDE: successful completion of an approved Beginner Driver Education course can reduce the standard Level One period from 12 months to eight months. Ontario gives the example of a person with six months of accepted credit needing two additional months after eligible BDE completion instead of six.
DriveTest makes the final decision about accepted documents, experience credit, and test eligibility. A driving school can explain the process and provide practical training but cannot approve credit or waive a test.
What documents should you bring?
Bring original documents. Photographs or informal copies may not be accepted. Requirements vary by applicant, but the current Ontario guidance includes:
- Your original, valid foreign driver’s licence.
- Accepted identification showing your legal name and date of birth.
- Documents required to show that Ontario is your primary residence and that your presence in Canada is legal.
- A current certified translation if the licence or supporting document is not in English or French.
- An acceptable authentication letter when the issue date on your current licence does not prove all the experience you are claiming.
An authentication letter must come from the foreign government or licensing agency that issued the licence, confirm that the licence is authentic, and be in English or French. Ontario’s handbook also says the letter should be recent. Confirm the exact format with DriveTest before arranging or paying for a document.
How long can a new Ontario resident use a foreign licence?
A new Ontario resident can generally use a valid licence from another province, state, or country for 60 days. After that, the resident needs an Ontario licence to continue driving. Visitors follow different rules, so do not treat visitor and resident requirements as interchangeable.
What do G1, G2, and full G mean?
G1 learner licence
A G1 driver must follow Ontario’s supervision, seatbelt, alcohol, time, and expressway restrictions. Practice must happen with a qualified accompanying driver. A certified Ontario driving instructor can provide structured instruction and can accompany a G1 driver on roads otherwise restricted under the normal G1 conditions.
G2 licence
After passing the first road test, a G2 driver can drive independently on Ontario roads in most circumstances but remains subject to novice-driver conditions, including zero alcohol. Additional overnight passenger limits apply to some drivers aged 19 and under.
Full G licence
The G road test assesses more advanced driving, including major-road and expressway skills where available. For non-exchange foreign-licence applicants under the July 1, 2026 rules, the G test comes only after passing G2 and completing the mandatory 12-month G2 waiting period.
