What DriveTest Checks Before the Test
Before a road test begins, the examiner performs a basic vehicle check. DriveTest explains that the examiner may check items such as signals, brake lights, horn, tires, and the general condition of the vehicle. If the vehicle is not fit for the test, the appointment can be declared out-of-order.
That is why students should never treat the vehicle as a small detail. A burnt-out brake light, unsafe tire, warning issue, or other vehicle problem can waste the appointment even if your driving skills are ready.
What to Bring on Test Day
DriveTest says students should bring a roadworthy vehicle, their current driver’s licence, any glasses or contact lenses needed for driving, enough fuel, confirmation details, and payment if they are attempting a standby road test. If you are renting a SparkOn car, we handle the vehicle side, but you still need to bring your licence and appointment details.
Arrive early enough to check in without rushing. If your test is at Toronto Metro East, Port Union, Oshawa, Peterborough or Lindsay, give yourself extra travel buffer for traffic, parking, weather, and unexpected delays.

When to Book the Rental
Book your car rental as soon as your DriveTest appointment is confirmed. Road test times cluster around the same busy windows, and instructor vehicles can get booked quickly.
DriveTest also notes that cancelling or rescheduling too close to the appointment can affect your fee. If you need to change your road test, handle it early and then update your instructor right away so the vehicle booking can be adjusted.
Should You Add a Lesson Before the Test?
If you have not driven recently, if you are using a test centre you do not know, or if you failed before, add a lesson or mock test before the rental. A warm-up helps, but it is not the same as real preparation.
A good pre-test lesson should cover:
- mirror, signal and shoulder-check timing
- complete stops and right-of-way decisions
- parallel parking, reverse parking and three-point turns
- lane changes and speed control
- test-centre traffic patterns and common pressure points
