Road-test day is easier when the practical details are settled before you leave home. For an Ontario G2 or G road test, bring your current driver’s licence, a printed copy of your confirmation email, any corrective lenses you need, and a suitable Class G vehicle in good working order with enough fuel. DriveTest does not supply a vehicle.
Ontario G2 and G Road-Test Checklist
Before you leave for your appointment, confirm that you have:
- Your current Ontario driver’s licence
- A printed copy of your road-test confirmation email
- Glasses or contact lenses, if you need them to drive
- A suitable Class G vehicle in good working order
- Enough fuel for the test
- Payment for the test fee if you are trying for a standby appointment
- A plan for getting home if you are unsuccessful
DriveTest asks applicants to arrive at least 30 minutes early. In bad or changeable weather, check the official service-disruptions page before travelling.
Bring Your Current Licence and Printed Confirmation
Your current driver’s licence identifies you and your licensing status. DriveTest also tells applicants to print their road-test confirmation email. Put both items together the night before so they are not forgotten during a rushed departure.
If the appointment class, location or time appears wrong, resolve the issue before test day. Ontario’s booking guidance says an appointment generally must be cancelled or rescheduled at least 48 hours ahead to avoid a cancellation fee.
If your licence requires corrective lenses, wear your glasses or contact lenses. Not wearing required corrective lenses is one reason DriveTest lists for cancelling a road test and charging part of the fee.
You Must Supply the Road-Test Vehicle
DriveTest Centres do not provide cars for G2 or G road tests. The vehicle can be owned, borrowed or rented, and it does not have to be an instructor’s car. It must be an appropriate Class G vehicle and fit for the test.
If you are travelling under G1 conditions, the drive to the centre must follow all G1 restrictions, including the rules for an accompanying driver. Arrange a qualified driver or another way home in case you do not pass and cannot legally drive away alone.
If you do not have access to a suitable car, SparkOn offers road-test car support in Scarborough and Toronto, subject to availability.
Check the Vehicle Before Test Day
The examiner performs a basic vehicle check before the road test. A problem can cause the appointment to be declared out-of-order. DriveTest says this normally means losing 50% of the prepaid road-test fee, while the other 50% remains as a credit toward a new booking.
Use this practical check before leaving:
- Confirm the foot brake, brake lights and turn signals work.
- Test the horn, speedometer, doors and seat belts.
- Inspect the tires for obvious damage or a flat; do not arrive on a temporary spare.
- Check the mirrors, windshield and secured licence plates.
- Confirm the headlights and tail lights work.
- When weather may require them, test the wipers, washer fluid and defroster.
- Look for fuel leaks, exhaust fumes or unsecured vehicle parts.
- Remove or secure loose contents and make sure the interior is clean.
- Put enough fuel in the vehicle for waiting and the full test.
This is a plain-language preparation list, not a substitute for DriveTest’s complete requirements. If you are unsure about a crack, warning light, modification or defect, contact the DriveTest Centre before the appointment.
Disable Cameras and Leave Passengers Outside
Cell phones, dash cameras, action cameras and other in-vehicle recording devices must be disabled during a road test. If an installed device cannot be disabled, DriveTest says the applicant must confirm that it is not recording the passenger compartment or aimed at the examiner; otherwise the test can be declared out-of-order.
Passengers and pets are not permitted in the car during the test. A translator or instructor may, with consent, assist during check-in and the post-test debrief, but cannot ride along. Contact the centre in advance if you need an accessibility arrangement.
Taking the G Test? Know Your Highway Experience
The G road test includes a highway component. Applicants must declare how often they have driven during the previous three months on roads with a speed limit of at least 80 km/h and/or specified 400-series highways and expressways.
DriveTest currently requires at least five qualifying trips and asks for the average trip length. Insufficient declared experience can cause the appointment to be cancelled and part of the fee to be lost. Do not guess or exaggerate; schedule the test after meeting the current official requirement.
Scarborough learners who need more experience with merging, lane changes, speed control and exiting can review SparkOn’s Full G highway preparation guide or book highway driving lessons.
Arrive Early and Check In
DriveTest asks applicants to arrive at least 30 minutes early. Park, go inside to check in at the kiosk or with a customer-service agent, then return to the vehicle and wait for the examiner. If the examiner has not reached your vehicle within 30 minutes after the appointment time, DriveTest instructs you to return inside and go to Counter A.
Road tests usually continue in ordinary weather. Severe weather can cause a postponement, so check DriveTest service disruptions on the day if conditions are uncertain.
A Calm Final Check for Scarborough Drivers
Do not use the last few minutes to learn a new manoeuvre. Adjust the seat and mirrors, confirm you can reach every control, silence and store your phone, and take a few slow breaths. The examiner will explain the test before it begins and cannot coach you during it, so ask procedural questions before moving the vehicle.
For the driving skills themselves, use SparkOn’s G2 road-test skills checklist for Scarborough. If test-day nerves affect observation, speed control or decisions, a focused nervous-driver lesson in Scarborough can help you practise a repeatable routine without a pass guarantee or supposed examiner route.
