Port Union vs Metro East: Which DriveTest Centre Fits You?

Last verified: October 2, 2026.

Scarborough drivers often compare Toronto Port Union and Toronto Metro East when booking a G2 or G road test. The better centre is not automatically the one someone calls “easier.” It is the one where the available appointment, road environment and your preparation fit together.

This comparison uses current official centre information and focuses on practical differences. It does not provide or promise a test route. Routes, examiner directions, traffic, construction and test formats can change.

Official centre details at a glance

The official DriveTest centre list identifies both locations as full-time Toronto centres offering G2 and G road tests.

  • Toronto Port Union: The Village of Abbey Lane Shopping Centre, 91 Rylander Boulevard, Unit 109A, Toronto, ON M1B 5M5. Listed road tests: G2 and G.
  • Toronto Metro East: Victoria Terrace Plaza, 1448 Lawrence Avenue East, Unit 15, Toronto, ON M4A 2V6. Listed road tests include G2, G and motorcycle classes.

Port Union may fit you if eastern Scarborough is familiar

Port Union is often convenient for learners who live or practise in eastern Scarborough. The surrounding environment includes a shopping-plaza start, multi-lane arterial roads, commercial access points and Highway 401 access for a G test.

That mix rewards smooth speed building, early lane selection and calm gap judgment. If most of your supervised highway experience is already on Highway 401, Port Union may reduce the amount of unfamiliar information you face on test day. Familiarity should mean that your scanning is calmer—not that you anticipate a memorized turn.

Metro East may fit you if DVP-style driving is familiar

Metro East is at Victoria Terrace Plaza, closer to central Scarborough and North York. Its surrounding environment includes busy urban arterial roads, commercial traffic and access toward the Don Valley Parkway for G-test expressway driving.

A learner who has already built steady experience on the DVP and nearby multi-lane roads may prefer Metro East. Traffic can change pace quickly, so observation, following distance and lane-change planning matter. A familiar ramp does not remove the need to read the live gap.

Use our Metro East G road-test guide to organize that preparation.

What stays the same at both centres

The Ontario test standard does not become different because you select another centre. The Official MTO Driver’s Handbook says the G test assesses major-road and expressway driving, merging, exiting, speed and space, lane changes, turns, curves, intersections and business areas. G applicants must complete a Declaration of Highway Driving Experience.

For a G2 test, you still need consistent observation, legal stops, right-of-way decisions, turns, lane changes and vehicle control. At either level, the vehicle must be suitable and you must follow the examiner’s directions only when safe and legal.

Five questions that make the choice easier

  1. Where have you built real experience? Choose based on transferable practice on similar roads, not one copied route.
  2. Which appointment gives you enough preparation time? The earliest opening is poor value if your habits are not ready.
  3. Which centre can you reach reliably? Consider travel time, the vehicle plan and the possibility of weekday or Saturday traffic.
  4. For a G test, which expressway environment have you practised properly? Highway 401 and the DVP are both listed by Ontario as qualifying freeways, but honest recent experience matters more than the name of the road.
  5. Can you stay adaptable? If a changed direction or unfamiliar street causes panic, broaden your practice before booking.

Do not choose from pass-rate rumours

Online discussions often label one centre easier and circulate unofficial pass rates. Those claims do not tell you who was tested, how prepared they were, which licence class they attempted or what conditions were present. SparkOn does not recommend choosing a centre from unsupported statistics.

No centre choice guarantees a pass. Examiners can direct candidates differently, and traffic, construction and test operations change. Practising only a rumoured route can leave you less prepared when the drive differs.

Be careful with timing comparisons too. A quiet practice drive does not prove that the same road will be quiet during your appointment. Instead of trying to find a supposedly perfect hour, practise responding to different legal and manageable traffic conditions. The transferable skill is maintaining observation and space when the situation becomes busier than expected.

A simple decision checklist

  • Check current appointment availability through the official DriveTest booking system.
  • Confirm the exact centre name and address on the appointment.
  • Compare travel time and your test-day vehicle arrangement.
  • Assess your comfort with the relevant road types, not a supposed exact route.
  • For G, make sure your highway-experience declaration will be truthful and sufficient.
  • Complete a mock test without coaching before deciding you are ready.
  • Check DriveTest service disruptions before departure.

The practical answer for Scarborough learners

Choose Port Union if its location, available date and Highway 401-style preparation fit you better. Choose Metro East if its location, appointment and DVP/urban-road experience fit you better. If both are convenient, let readiness and scheduling decide—not rumours.

If you are unsure, a quiet assessment drive can reveal which environments still need work. SparkOn Driving Academy offers mock road tests in Scarborough and centre-relevant preparation without promising a route. Book a Scarborough lesson for focused feedback before choosing your appointment.
