What Happens If You Fail Your G2 or G Test in Ontario?

Rules and fees last verified October 2, 2026.

An unsuccessful Ontario road test is frustrating, but it does not erase your driving progress. What happens next depends on which licence you hold, whether it is still valid, and what the examiner recorded. The useful response is administrative first, emotional second: protect your licence timeline, get the result, then practise the specific weak habits.

You generally wait at least 10 days

DriveTest’s road-test guidance says an unsuccessful applicant may take as many road tests as needed while the driver’s licence remains valid and generally must wait at least 10 days between tests. The Official MTO Driver’s Handbook also states a minimum 10-day wait.

Ten days is the earliest general interval, not a recommended preparation plan. If the result shows repeated observation, right-of-way, speed or highway problems, booking the first available day can reproduce the same result. Choose a date that leaves enough time for focused practice.

You pay the applicable road-test fee again

DriveTest’s official schedule currently lists a G2 road test at $53.75 and a G road test at $91.25. Applicable fees are due for another attempt. Check the current fee page immediately before booking because prices can change.

This is separate from lesson or vehicle-support costs. If you use a driving-school car, confirm the service price, warm-up time, pickup arrangement and cancellation policy separately.

Your current licence status matters

If you are unsuccessful on the first road test while your G1 is still valid, you remain a G1 driver and must keep following every G1 condition. You cannot drive home alone. The MTO Handbook says a Level One driver must have the required accompanying driver at the test centre.

If you are unsuccessful on the G test while your G2 is valid, you generally remain a G2 driver and continue to follow G2 conditions. DriveTest recommends planning alternate transportation home in case you are unsuccessful. Even if the licence remains valid, give yourself a few minutes before driving again; frustration is not a good condition for immediate practice.

Expiry changes the situation. Ontario says the graduated-licensing process must normally be completed within five years. Its new-driver page says that if a G1 has expired, the person needs to start over and pay the fees again. It also says a driver whose G2 is about to expire may take the G1 road test again to obtain five more years as a G2 to finish the process. Do not guess about an expiry case—contact DriveTest before the licence expires and confirm the option that applies to your record.

Get the result while the drive is fresh

DriveTest says the examiner provides a brief verbal summary. Paper score sheets are available on request within 13 months. If the test was completed on a road-test tablet within the last 15 days, the result can be downloaded after identity verification; after that, visit a DriveTest Centre for a copy.

Listen to the debrief without arguing the drive turn by turn. Write down the location and situation of each concern as soon as possible. A mark such as observation or speed becomes useful only when you connect it to the actual moment: pulling away, a right turn, a lane change, a merge or an approach to an intersection.

Separate a driving result from an out-of-order test

An out-of-order appointment is not the same as completing the drive and receiving an unsuccessful result. The MTO Handbook says a test may be declared out-of-order if the vehicle does not meet Ministry standards or another issue prevents completion. In that case, 50% of the road-test fee is lost and the other 50% remains as a credit.

DriveTest also says a G appointment may be cancelled as out-of-order if the applicant does not have sufficient declared highway-driving experience. Check the vehicle, licence, confirmation, fuel, corrective lenses and G-test highway declaration before the next appointment. SparkOn’s road-test checklist can help organize that review.

Build a retest plan from the pattern

For a G2 retest: group the feedback into observation, stops and right-of-way, speed, lane position, turns, lane changes, parking and reversing. Practise one group at a time, then combine the skills in normal traffic. Use the existing G2 recovery guide for a detailed practice sequence.

For a G retest: identify whether the problem began before the highway, during the merge, while maintaining speed and space, during lane changes, or when exiting. Repeat the complete highway sequence on varied legal routes and traffic conditions. Do not practise only one ramp.

A mock test is useful after the corrections begin to hold without reminders. During the mock, the instructor should limit coaching, record repeated habits and give a structured debrief. Read SparkOn’s mock road-test readiness guide before choosing the retest date.

What not to do after an unsuccessful result

  • Do not blame one parking correction while ignoring repeated observation marks.
  • Do not book only because a cancellation opened tomorrow.
  • Do not change test centres to avoid practising the underlying skill.
  • Do not pay anyone who guarantees a pass or claims a secret route.
  • Do not let the licence expiry date approach without contacting DriveTest.
  • Do not practise highway driving outside the conditions allowed by your current licence.

A calm next-step checklist

  1. Confirm your licence status and expiry date.
  2. Download or request the result sheet.
  3. Write down the situations connected to each concern.
  4. Allow at least the official waiting period.
  5. Schedule targeted practice and a final independent mock.
  6. Recheck the vehicle and appointment details.
  7. Book through the official DriveTest channel when you are ready.

If you want help turning a result sheet into a practical Scarborough plan, book G2 or Full G road-test preparation with SparkOn. Bring the sheet if you have it. The aim is not simply to repeat the test—it is to return with the repeated weak habits corrected.
