What is a BDE course in Ontario?
Beginner Driver Education is Ontario’s government-approved training program for new drivers. It combines classroom or digital learning, in-car instruction, and flexible training time.
An approved Ontario BDE program includes at least 40 hours: 20 hours of classroom or digital instruction, 10 hours of in-vehicle training, and 10 hours of flexible instruction. Graduates can reduce the standard G1 waiting period by four months, allowing an eligible student to attempt the G1 exit road test after 8 months instead of 12.
What does an Ontario BDE program include?
Each component builds a different part of safe driving knowledge and practical ability.
20 hours classroom or digital
Learn Ontario road rules, risk awareness, decision-making, responsible driving, and the knowledge behind safe habits.
10 hours in the vehicle
Practise observation, steering, braking, turns, intersections, lane changes, parking, traffic decisions, and progressive road skills with a licensed instructor.
10 hours flexible instruction
Complete approved flexible learning such as additional classroom, digital, simulator, in-vehicle, or assigned learning activities, depending on the program.

Can I take my G2 test after 8 months?

No. Individual lessons can target specific skills, while BDE is a complete approved program with classroom or digital, in-car, and flexible instruction requirements.
Do I receive a paper certificate?
Approved schools certify successful completion online and the student record is updated through the Ministry. Ontario explains how to order a driver history if proof is needed.
