Scarborough newcomer driving guide
Ontario New Driver Starter Kit for Scarborough Newcomers
A practical guide for newcomers and first-time Ontario drivers who want to understand the G1, G2, and G process, plan lessons, and avoid confusion before booking a road test.
New drivers in Scarborough usually begin with Ontario’s G1 knowledge test, then prepare for the G2 road test, and later complete the full G road test. If you already have foreign driving experience, your path depends on whether your country has a licence exchange agreement with Ontario and what DriveTest accepts.
Key points for newcomers
Use this as a simple starting checklist before you spend money on lessons, booking, or road-test car support.
Confirm your licence path first
Check whether your foreign licence is exchangeable or whether you must enter Ontario’s graduated licensing process through DriveTest.
Do not assume you can go direct to G
Effective July 1, 2026, drivers from non-exchange jurisdictions cannot use foreign experience to skip directly to the G test.
Plan practice around real Scarborough roads
Build habits for residential streets, school zones, multi-lane roads, parking lots, major intersections, and highway-style merging when appropriate.
Who this guide is for
- Newcomers living in Scarborough, Malvern, Agincourt, Port Union, Metro East, or nearby GTA areas
- Drivers with an international licence who are unsure whether they need G1, G2, or G testing
- Complete beginners who want a step-by-step Ontario lesson plan

- Nervous drivers who want patient coaching before traffic, highways, or road tests
Step-by-step Ontario licence path
Get ready for G1
The G1 is Ontario’s first licence stage for new drivers. You must understand road signs, traffic laws, basic safety rules, and G1 conditions before driving with an accompanying driver.
Prepare for G2
The G2 road test checks everyday driving skills such as turning, stopping, lane position, parking, observation, speed control, and safe decisions in traffic.
Prepare for full G
The G road test is the final road test. It can include more advanced skills such as expressway or major-road driving, lane changes, merging, spacing, and independent traffic judgment.
International licence holders after July 1, 2026
Ontario’s rules changed for drivers from jurisdictions that do not have a licence exchange agreement with Ontario.
- DriveTest may recognize up to 12 months of eligible foreign driving experience.
- Drivers from non-exchange jurisdictions are required to complete both the G2 and G road tests.
- Foreign experience cannot reduce the mandatory waiting period between the G2 and G road tests.
- Exchange countries and non-exchange countries follow different rules, so check your case before booking.

Week 3: Parking and lane changes
Practise parallel parking, roadside stops, three-point turns, reverse parking if needed, lane changes, mirrors, signals, and spacing.
Week 4: Mock test and corrections
Run a mock road test, review repeated mistakes, practise busier roads, and confirm your test-day plan, vehicle, documents, and arrival time.
Should you take BDE or individual lessons?
BDE is best when you want a complete beginner program. Individual lessons are useful when you need focused coaching, road-test preparation, refresher practice, or help adjusting from another country.
- BDE: SparkOn course format: 40 hours total: 30 hours online and 10 hours of in-car lessons. Confirm the current components before enrolling.
- Individual lessons: Best for targeted practice, nervous-driver confidence, highway driving, parking, test preparation, or an assessment lesson.
- Road-test car support: Useful when you need a test-ready vehicle, warm-up, and test-centre coordination.
Frequently asked questions
Can an international licence holder go directly to the G test in Ontario?
For non-exchange jurisdictions, no. Effective July 1, 2026, DriveTest says those drivers must complete both the G2 and G road tests, even if some foreign experience is credited.
How many lessons should a newcomer take?
It depends on your previous experience, confidence, Ontario rule knowledge, and test goal. Many students start with an assessment lesson, then build a focused plan.
Does BDE guarantee an insurance discount?
No. BDE may help with insurance depending on the insurer, but discounts are not guaranteed. Ask your insurer what proof it requires.
Does SparkOn offer pickup in Scarborough?
Pickup may be available in Scarborough and selected nearby areas depending on the exact address, time, route, service, and instructor schedule. Confirm before booking.
Can I practise around the exact road-test route?
No school should promise an exact route. SparkOn focuses on practice areas, common road conditions, safe habits, and test-ready decision-making.
