Booking an Ontario road test is straightforward when you use the official system and have the right information ready. The details that cause trouble are usually timing: booking before you are eligible, choosing a date before your skills are ready, or changing an appointment inside DriveTest’s cancellation window.
This guide explains the current official process for booking, cancelling and rescheduling a G2 or G road test. Policies and booking screens can change, so confirm the linked DriveTest pages when you act.
Use only official Ontario and DriveTest channels
Ontario’s Official MTO Driver’s Handbook warns applicants to use only Ontario.ca and DriveTest.ca for accurate road-test information. The Ministry and DriveTest do not charge an extra service fee merely to book a regular road test. Be cautious with third-party sites that promise an appointment, a licence or a guaranteed result.
Start at the official DriveTest road-test booking page. You can also schedule, confirm, cancel or rebook by visiting a DriveTest Centre or calling the official automated booking line listed by DriveTest: 1-888-570-6110 or 647-776-0331.
What to have ready before booking
- Your Ontario driver’s licence number and expiry date.
- The licence class or road test you are eligible to take.
- Your preferred DriveTest centre plus one or two practical alternatives.
- A date range that leaves enough preparation time.
- A reliable vehicle plan for test day.
- A valid Visa or Mastercard if payment is required online.
DriveTest’s new-booking help says eligible applicants may book one appointment at a time. Do not reserve a slot simply because it appears. First make sure the date works with your licence timing, preparation and vehicle access.
How to book online
- Open the official DriveTest booking system from DriveTest.ca.
- Enter the requested licence and identity details accurately.
- Select the eligible road-test class.
- Search your preferred centre and realistic alternatives.
- Choose a date and time that you can attend without rushing.
- Review the centre, class, date and personal details before payment or confirmation.
- Save and print the appointment confirmation for your records.
The official booking help says the system is normally available 24 hours a day, seven days a week unless otherwise posted. It also says online appointments may be made up to 24 hours in advance. Availability changes as appointments are booked or released; no legitimate service can guarantee a particular opening.
How to reschedule an appointment
DriveTest’s edit-booking instructions say the online system can change appointments originally booked online, by phone or in person. You need your driver’s licence number and expiry date.
- Return to the official booking system and access your appointment dashboard.
- Confirm the existing appointment details.
- Select the option to modify or reschedule.
- Choose an available replacement date and location.
- Review the new details carefully before confirming.
- Save the updated confirmation and remove the old date from your calendar.
Do not assume that opening the reschedule screen protects your current slot. Read each on-screen instruction before confirming a change, and keep the final confirmation.
The 48-hour change and cancellation rule
DriveTest currently says you must provide at least 48 hours’ notice before the scheduled appointment time to avoid forfeiting the road-test fee. Cancelling or changing/rescheduling within 48 hours means losing the fee.
Count backward from the appointment time, not simply the calendar date. If you know you cannot attend, act early. Waiting for a more convenient replacement slot can move you inside the penalty window.
DriveTest’s payments, cancellations and refunds page also says that after more than three road-test cancellations within six months, you cannot book or cancel through an automated system; you must contact the call centre or visit a DriveTest Centre.
How to cancel
- Access the official booking dashboard with your licence number and expiry date.
- Open the correct appointment and select cancellation.
- Review any fee consequence shown before confirming.
- Complete the cancellation and retain the confirmation.
- If the automated system will not process it, contact DriveTest through its official phone line or visit a centre.
A cancellation and a reschedule are not the same choice. If you still plan to take the test, look for a suitable replacement through the modify/reschedule flow. If you cancel, you may need to make a fresh booking afterward.
Common booking mistakes
- Using an unofficial site: start from DriveTest.ca rather than a search ad or appointment reseller.
- Choosing the wrong centre: Toronto Port Union and Toronto Metro East are different locations. Confirm the full name and address.
- Booking before skills are ready: an early date is not useful if you still need prompts for basic observation or highway merging.
- Ignoring the 48-hour rule: last-minute changes can forfeit the fee.
- Forgetting the vehicle plan: DriveTest does not supply your test vehicle.
- Losing the confirmation: save the updated version after every change.
- Believing a route guarantee: booking a centre does not lock in an exact route or examiner direction.
Before you keep the appointment
Use the days before the cancellation deadline for an honest readiness check. Can you drive without continuous reminders? For a G test, do you have truthful recent highway experience and stable merging, lane-changing and exiting skills? Is the vehicle suitable?
Review SparkOn’s road-test document and test-day checklist and vehicle checklist. If your driving still needs work, rescheduling early is better than hoping the pressure of test day will fix an inconsistent habit.
Book the test when the preparation matches
The best appointment is one you can attend with the right licence, a reliable vehicle and skills that hold up without coaching. Appointment availability matters, but it should not be the only reason you choose a day or centre.
