Starting July 1, 2026, a driver from a non-exchange jurisdiction cannot use foreign experience to go directly to the G road test. Ontario may credit up to 12 months of verified experience, but the driver must complete the G2 test, wait at least 12 months, and then complete the G test. Reciprocal licence exchanges follow different rules.
What changed on July 1, 2026?
Ontario created a separate, mandatory path for drivers whose licences come from jurisdictions without an exchange agreement.
Maximum 12-month credit
Ontario may recognize eligible foreign experience from the previous three years, up to a maximum of 12 months, after DriveTest verifies the documents.
G2 road test required
With enough accepted credit, a driver may take the G2 road test immediately after completing the vision and knowledge requirements.
G comes 12 months later
After passing G2, the driver must wait at least 12 months before attempting the G road test. Foreign experience cannot reduce this waiting period.

Can I go directly to the G road test?
