What changed on July 1, 2026?
Ontario created a separate, mandatory path for drivers whose licences come from jurisdictions without an exchange agreement.
Maximum 12-month credit
Ontario may recognize eligible foreign experience from the previous three years, up to a maximum of 12 months, after DriveTest verifies the documents.
G2 road test required
With enough accepted credit, a driver may take the G2 road test immediately after completing the vision and knowledge requirements.
G comes 12 months later
After passing G2, the driver must wait at least 12 months before attempting the G road test. Foreign experience cannot reduce this waiting period.

Can I go directly to the G road test?
Only applicants whose licences qualify for a reciprocal exchange may be able to receive an Ontario licence without the normal test path. Starting July 1, 2026, applicants from non-exchange jurisdictions cannot go directly to the G road test: they must complete G2, wait at least 12 months, and then complete G. DriveTest confirms each applicant’s eligibility.
